Children and Parents Learn about Fire Safety at Harlingen Public Library

Harlingen, Texas– It was a hot afternoon, but that didn’t stop these youngsters from enjoying a close-up look at one of Harlingen’s Fire Trucks.  It was part of a special presentation at the Harlingen Public Library on Monday, June 11.

The library has a schedule full of fun, educational, and free activities planned throughout the summer for children and adults.

Approximately 156 people were present for the fire safety presentation by Lt. Joey Ruedas, Drive Omar Torres, and Firefighter Eric Ramirez of Fire Station #1.

The three started indoors by talking to the group about what to do in case of a fire or other types of emergencies. They also showed them their fire uniforms as well as demonstrated how a thermal imaging camera works.

Once outside the children and their parents got a close-up look at the outside of the firetruck and all the equipment that is stored in the side compartments. Then the children lined up to take their turn at sitting in the truck and pretending they too were firefighters.  By the smiles on their little faces, I think its safe to say they had fun.

Don’t miss other fun and exciting activities at the library this week. Tuesday, June 12, is Early Literacy Preschool Storytime from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, June 13, enjoy playing Chess from 6 – 7 p.m., Thursday its Lego Day from 2 – 4 p.m., and Friday, June 15, it’s Family Movie time from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and the feature film is Despicable Me 3.  For the full children's schedule visit
