HARLINGEN, TEXAS–Food allergy warning signs are being installed at all City of Harlingen Playgrounds. Parks & Recreation Staff started installing the signs after a young resident with allergies asked for help to increase awareness about the dangers to those with allergies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in 13 children has severe allergies which could be deadly. CDC says even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives, or swollen airways. “In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis within minutes of being exposed to an allergen.”
In an effort to provide a safe play environment for all park users, the City is highly encouraging that people keep food in picnic designated areas only so as not to contaminate the playgrounds. The signs also warn about sharing food with children especially without their caregiver's permission. Making sure children wash their hands after eating will also help avoid contamination.
If you visit our parks please help us keep them safe for you and everyone else who plays there.
