UTRGV Breaks Ground on Institute for Neuroscience

Harlingen, Texas–This is the result of a long partnership and a lot of vision said the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley President, Dr. Guy Bailey during a special ceremony on November 6 as many gathered to witness history in the making as the Valley’s University broke ground for the construction of The Institute for Neuroscience.

The two story building is being built very near the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) at Haine Drive and North Whalen Road on 35 acres of land donated by the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation.  The institute, part of the UTRGV School of Medicine, will serve as a place where medical students can learn how to be doctors but also how to be researchers.  It will house clinics and diagnostic centers for numerous neuropsychiatric and aging disorders according to a UTRGV media release.

Mayor Chris Boswell said there were many people to thank for this becoming a reality such as UTRGV, the Harlingen Medical Community, the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation, The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and our state elected officials who never gave up the fight to bring a medical school to the Valley. “From the very beginning, our focus in developing this school of medicine has been on the quality of life for the residents of our communities and for increasing healthcare and specialty care here for the residents of our City. Today is an astonishingly great day in Harlingen.”

UTRGV School of Medicine Dean, Dr. John Krouse said the institute’s focus will be on diseases that are common to the RGV. “We’re looking at a variety of psychiatric areas, neurological diseases, diabetes, obesity, addiction studies, stroke research, psychosis, and aging disorders among others that are so important to this area.”

Dr. Bailey added that this institute will change the Valley. “The health of the Valley, the research that goes on here, the medical care that goes on here will make a difference.”

Construction is scheduled to get under way within the next several months and should be completed by July 2021.
