City Announces Plans for Mural for Southwest Airlines Founder

HARLINGEN, Texas–Herb Kelleher, who passed away earlier this year, is credited with helping put Valley International Airport on the map after choosing Harlingen as Southwest Airlines fourth service destination.  Southwest began serving Harlingen in 1975 just four years after initiating service from Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

Because of Southwest’s low cost, reliable, and convenient air service, VIA is the largest and most used airport in the Rio Grande Valley with more than 700,000 passengers on a yearly basis.  Of those, almost half use Southwest Airlines to travel to and from Harlingen.

To honor his contribution to Harlingen, the City has received permission from the Kelleher family and Southwest Airlines to create a mural in his honor.

The mural will be created by Angel Hernandez, a local and talented artist who has already created several murals in Downtown Harlingen.  The mural will be placed on the concrete wall at Lozano Plaza that faces the Baxter Lofts.
