HARLINGEN, Texas–The City of Harlingen joins the nation in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a free program celebrating the 209th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence Day.
The free event, to be held at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium will be similar to celebrations held in Mexico and the United States in remembrance of Mexico’s struggles for independence from Spanish rule. The Harlingen event, organized by the Harlingen Convention and Visitors Bureau will be held on September 13 from 6-8 p.m. It will feature Juan Manuel Sias, Ballet Folklorico Grupo Telpolchalli, and Mariachi Margaritas.
El Grito de Dolores or cry for independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla will be reenacted by Mexican Consul Juan Carlos Cue Vega.
Hispanic Heritage Week was first established in 1968 and was later expanded to one month from September 15 to October 15 by congress and President Ronald Reagan. It is a time set aside to celebrate and pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation.
