HARLINGEN, Texas– Last year there were 116, 578 reported cases of abuse of elderly and disabled people in Texas. Of those 84,439 were confirmed by the Adult Protection Services of Texas. Alarmingly that number could be higher as elder abuse is grossly under reported due to fear and shame.
That’s why Harlingen is joining communities across the Lone Star State to raise awareness and understanding about adult abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. It happens to men and women of all incomes, cultural and ethnic groups, and it happens to healthy and not so healthy individuals. But you could help make a difference. If you suspect someone you know is being abused call the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400. All callers will remain anonymous. You can also report it online at TxAbuseHotline.org.
On May 2, 2019, local Adult Protection Services Specialists accepted a proclamation from Mayor Chris Boswell declaring the month of May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month and urged all citizens to work together to help reduce abuse and neglect of the elderly in our community.
