Harlingen Commission Recognizes Community Development Board

Harlingen, Texas–Community Development Block Grant Advisory Board Members and City Staff were recognized during the regularly scheduled City Commission Meeting of April 3. Mayor Chris Boswell presented board members with a proclamation declaring the week of April 1 through April 5, 2019, as Community Development Block Grant week in Harlingen.

The local recognition coincides with the National designation to raise awareness about the many services that CDBG Programs provide and the difference they make in our communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities primarily to persons of low and moderate incomes.

The City of Harlingen receives yearly funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide resources for a wide variety of community development activities and projects such as rehabilitating homes, constructing new parks, roadways, and improving infrastructure.

The CDBG Advisory Board is made up of ten community members who serve three year terms.  They serve as advisors to the City Commission on all matters pertaining to how CDBG funds should be spent.

Board Members Cesar Morales, Sonia Casas, Tina Puente, and Elaine Flores attended the meeting and accepted the proclamation.  Mayor Boswell thanked the members for their volunteerism and CDBG Director Tammy Jackson and her staff for their hard work.
