Harlingen Rehabilitating Vestal Park and Creating Fourth All-inclusive Park

Harlingen, Texas–A groundbreaking ceremony today kicked-off a project to rehabilitate Vestal Park.  Located on the northeast side of the City, the park will soon become the fourth all-inclusive park with play areas designed to accommodate children with special needs.  The project includes adding playground equipment, field lighting, and a new parking lot. The park additions are thanks to a $309,035.00 Community Development Block Grant.

The 14-acre park adjacent to Zavala Elementary already has three soccer fields, a restroom, a small picnic shelter, and a small parking lot.

Mayor Chris Boswell and Commissioners Tudor Uhlhorn and Victor Leal were joined by City officials, the Zavala Elementary 4th Grade News Casters, Community Development Advisory Board Members, as well as members of the community to officially commence the rehabilitation project.

“There is something very, very special and brave about opening a new park for children to play in. Today we get to do that and it’s a very special feeling to try to make a better place for our kids,” said Mayor Boswell as he welcomed those in attendance.

“We do a lot of ribbon cuttings that are great for our community but there is nothing as rewarding as something like this– building a new playground for children,” said Commissioner Uhlhorn who represents District 2 where the park is located.

The playground equipment is already being installed and crews will then begin working on the parking lot and adding lighting to one of the soccer fields.  Meantime, the City will continue to seek funds to light up the other two fields.
