Downtown Baxter Building to be Completed As Scheduled

Harlingen, Texas–Alone and abandoned for at least 30 years, the sounds of laughter and happy times will soon return to the Baxter Building.  The redevelopment of this iconic building constructed almost 92 years ago is almost complete.  MRE Capital is converting it into 24 housing units.

Works crews have been busy since the project got underway in July of 2018.  Everything is new with the exception of the shell of the building.  During two recent visits to the building one with Mayor Chris Bowell the other with Commissioner Victor Leal we saw how much work has already been done to the nine floor building.  Floor one will house the administration office, a common kitchen area, a workout room, and a computer room.  Floors 2 through 9 will each consist of three apartment units.

Rodger Lewis, the onsite project manager says each floor has one and two bedroom units and some are ADA compliant.  Each unit will include a refrigerator, stove, and a stacked washer and dryer.

Mayor Boswell is excited about the transformation of the building telling a local news station this is the last big piece in the city’s revitalization plan for Downtown and that he’s very happy with the partnership with MRE Capital and the huge investment they have made into our community.

As reported during the July 2018 groundbreaking, the project will be complete this coming May.
