Harlingen Unemployment Rate is One of the Lowest in RGV

Harlingen, Texas— Finding a job in Harlingen is easier than in other parts of the Rio Grande Valley.  The November unemployment rate released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the unemployment rate in Harlingen is 5.0 percent. The report released on December 21, 2018, demonstrates a historic low unemployment rate for the City. This is the lowest rate for Harlingen since March 2008.

This unemployment rate is also lower than the November 2017 rate which was 5.9 percent.  Harlingen Economic Development Corporation Manager and CEO Raudel Garza attributes the lower numbers to the continuous growth throughout the City. “We had really strong growth this past month in the trade, transportation, and the utility sectors in Cameron County.  Much of that hiring was in Harlingen.  Couple that with continued growth in the healthcare sector and we see Harlingen’s unemployment numbers reach its lowest point in over 10 years.”

Garza says it’s also the third lowest rate amongst Valley Cities. Only McAllen and Edinburg had a lower unemployment rate in November at 4.1 and 4.3 respectively.

He says a number of other new businesses such as Jimmy John’s, Raising Cane, and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, also contributed to the low unemployment rate.  Garza expects the numbers to remain low with several other businesses preparing to open their doors soon such a new hotel and several restaurant chains.
