Harlingen, Texas —Christmas has come and gone and many people may be looking to get rid of their trees. The City of Harlingen encourages all residents to recycle their Christmas trees instead of throwing them out. The Public Works Department is collecting trees at the City’s Recycling Center where a roll-off container has been set up specifically for trees.
Residents are asked to take their Christmas trees to the center located at 1006 South Commerce Street. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
Trees must be free of decorations, tinsel, flocking and stands. The trees will be taken to South Padre Island where they will be used to help fortify the sand dunes.
Meanwhile, wrapping paper, cards, and boxes can be recycled too. Simply drop them off at the Recycling Center. For more information on what items can be recycled residents can call 956-427-8824.
Harlingen’s Christmas tree collection runs through January 6, 2019.
