RGV Hispanic Genealogical Society Honored

Harlingen, Texas– Mayor Chris Boswell recognized the Rio Grande Valley Genealogical Society during the City Commission Meeting of December 5, 2018, for volunteer work in the community.  Specifically, for undertaking the task of photographing and transcribing the headstones in the Harlingen City Cemetery located on F Street.

The work completed in 2008 led to permanent grid markers by local Boy Scouts to help visitors locate relatives.  The grid markers contain a letter and a number which corresponds with the location of specific plots.

Recently the Society published a book to assist residents to locate their loved ones and won first place in The Texas State Genealogical Society–“Books Published by a Partner Society.”   The award is one of thirty prizes in 11 writing and website categories, celebrating the efforts of societies throughout the state.

RGV Hispanic Genealogical Society Members Ofelia Olsson, Mary Torres, Dominga Anguiano, and Andreina Muniz attended the recent City Commission Meeting and accepted the recognition.

The Book titled Harlingen City Cemetery, Harlingen, Texas: An Index of the Headstones Located Therein can be found at the Harlingen Public Library.
