HARLINGEN, Texas– Dozens of Harlingen residents and businesses were recognized recently for their contribution to help with the renovation of the Historical Museum renovation project. Their donations were part of a fund raising effort to renovate the building that once served as the Air Police Squadron and Brig of the Harlingen Air Force Base.
The facility’s front wall now bares a mural showcasing different types of airplanes used by the Air Force during World War II. Each plane has the name of the person or business that contributed to the fundraising effort. Donations started at $100 with an AT-6 Texan, C-47 for a $500 donation, a YC-125 Raider for a $1,000 donation, a C-123 for a $2500 donation, a B-29 airplane for a $5,000 donation, and a Super Constellation-L-1049 for a $10,000 donation.
HEB made the largest donation of $100,000 and the building will now be known as the HEB Historical Building.
Mayor Chris Boswell, and Commissioners Mike Mezmar and Victor Leal were present for the unveiling of the new wall. The Mayor thanked everyone for their donations and for keeping Harlingen’s legacy alive. “Thank you to each and every one of the folks that contributed and whose names are featured on this wall we want to thank them and recognize them for continuing in the footsteps of those that have gone before us and celebrating the history of our community and preserving the history of our community and ensuring that we continue to tell the special story that Harlingen has to tell.”
The goal was to raise $300,000 and according to Museum Director Joel Humphries, they are about $60,000 shy of that amount. The funds are being used to renovate the facility that houses the permanent collection of Harlingen and Texas historical objects and photos.
You too can help preserve Harlingen’s heritage by purchasing a plane with your name on it and help the museum reach its goal. Call (956) 216-4901 to find out how.
