City Commission Observes Constitution Week

HARLINGEN, Texas– Constitution Day is observed annually on September 17 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

The constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia to improve the Articles of the Confederation.  It is the framework for the federal government and is the highest form of law in the country.  It also protects the people and guarantees their basic rights.

This year marks the 231st anniversary of the signing. Celebrating the monumental event started in 1956 after a petition by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

During the September 5 City Commission Meeting, Mayor Chris Boswell presented members of the local service organization with a proclamation declaring September 17-23 as Constitution Week in Harlingen, saying it is fitting and proper to officially recognize this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary.  He asked all citizens to “reaffirm the ideals that the framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties.”  DAR members Tomasita Lipe and Cindy Worley accepted the proclamation and thanked the Mayor and Commission for the recognition.
