AT THE CROSSROADS: HARLINGEN'S FIRST 100 YEARS
36-CentennialCover (Small).jpg
At the Crossroads: Harlingen's First 100 Years is a 152-page, hardcover book highlighting the community's accomplishments and heritage. The book, by local author Eileen Mattei, includes more than 300 historic photographs and is destined to be a coveted keepsake for generations to come.

At the Crossroads offers three approaches to Harlingen's past. The first is a nine-chapter narrative history, examining the city from different perspectives, such as its role as a crossroads and as a military post. Chapters entitled "Floods, Freezes and Fires," "Architectural Landmarks," and "Time Off" review disasters, triumphs, and everyday life in Harlingen over the past century. The second section is a year-by-year timeline of events, while the third offers the stories of individual families and businesses. The book also features a panoramic foldout of Harlingen in 1912, two years after the City's incorporation, with 36 historic sites identified.

Copies of At the Crossroads are on sale at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum and at the Harlingen Public Library for $34.95 plus tax. Sales of
this commemorative publication will help raise funds for a wide range of centennial activities.  For more info, call Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, (956) 216-4901.

Other Centennial memoirs may be purchased at City Hall, located at 118 E. Tyler.  Please stop in and select your items in the Cashier's Office, and then your items may be picked up in the City Manager's office, down the hall.  For more information, call the City Manager's office at  (956) 216-5001.
